Just an update, I've made some pretty major changes to the blog comment system. In doing so I am unable to bring over all the old comments from the old system. The comment service has been going down A LOT lately so I've removed those links and hosted the commenting system on my own system here. The system isn't as nice as the old one or as pretty but at least it's function and when they are down we won't have to wait for it to time out anymore. Anyway... I'll try this for a while and see if it works out ok.... tnx....
Do you remember the code red virus? It’s a very simple virus to kill and almost as easy to prevent. Or so I thought, but then again maybe I’m just seeing people laziness, lack of knowledge, caring or both. I reset the apache logs on the first of April. Since that reset I’ve log 71 different IP’s attempting to infect my server. Now of course this virus doesn’t know or care if you’re an IIS server or apache it just knows it wanted to try and infect everything that responds to port 80. Anyway that’s just an observation.
So today I decided to get off my ass and do something. I took a day off from job hunting. I made the decision to do something about my Grizzly Adams look. I’ve been doing the full beard thing just cuz I could I guess. I finally shaved. I feel much better. I left the trademark goatee of course. I was actually dressed before noon today. Heck even me getting dressed at all is a major accomplishment. I then put up the clothes that have been setting the baskets for the last month. I think my shirts have permanent creases from sitting in there for so long. I also cleaned the kitchen and washed dishes. I’m not going to kid anybody and say I did laundry, that’s usually a couple of days of pain and anguish for me to get all the laundry done. I picked up in the living room a bit too. Now I know what you’re thinking, that’s not really doing a lot. That’s basically just normal stuff. But for me the last month, that’s a lot. I actually didn’t sit at the computer all day long. Anyway, maybe tomorrow I’ll vacuum.
So I've got these damn doves that have decided that my balcony would be a good play to build a nest. Last year they keep messing things up and I decided I had enough of that. I started chasing them off with a broom (a very Okie thing to do). They kept it up till they had to lay these eggs. With all the broom action they didn’t have time to build a nest so they just laid them on my bicycle. Of course they just rolled off of that and crashed to the ground. Well that was pretty sad but damn it they should have been a little smarter than that. So they are back. They haven’t been trying to build a nest yet. I’m home 24/7 now so I have plenty of time to chase them off. Doves are good eatin’ but these things act like pigeons so I’m a little afraid to fry them up. Anyway… More to come on the Dove/Pigeon crisis!
Today I was applying for a job at a health care company. They are always a pain in the ass. They asked me to describe how I would design and implement subnetting, VLSM, and CIDR. Now I’m sure you are thinking the exact thing I was thinking, “What in the hell are you talking about”. Well I didn’t know how to deal with this so I just went on through the application and was just about to finish with out answering the question. I decided that I’d go back and see what I could do with that question. Well first thing I had to do was look up and find out what VLSM (Variable Length Subnet Masking) and CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) means. Ok, now I know what those acronyms mean but what are they. I spent the next thirty minutes to an hour reading about them. All of a sudden the light clicked on. I have not had “ANY” education in networking and have just learned it by necessity. It was at this moment that I figured out that I’d been using VLSM and CIDR for years and just didn’t know that was what it was called. Now that I knew, I knew what I was talking about, I spent almost an hour writing a two page response in great detail to their question. So I’ve sent off the application and am hoping for the best. Don’t you hate it when you know something that you don’t know you know….
Today I decieded to add a There.Com board to the message board. This thing has pretty much taken over my life so I figured I'd just add a board rather than clutter up the blog with it. Anyway..... So I've decieded that I've got to pull myself outta this little depression thing I've been fighting the last couple of weeks. I thought it was my normal PMSing that I do just about every month but I don't think so. I blamed a lot of it on being sick the last few weeks but I don't think that's it either. This week I'm going to get the house cleaned up and try to start back into my exercise program. At least get out and do some roller blading with Brandt or something. Anyhoo...
So I'm still completely obsesses with There... I took yesterday and most of today off in a way. I've been doing some serious exploration lately. Right now I've been driving north from Tiki. If Tiki was at the equator then right about now I'd be either at the north pole or just beyond the north pole. I can see the people on Tiki's name tags just at the horizon. It won't be long before I'll be on the back side of the planet. I expect to see a lot of water and that's about it.... My plan it to circle the planet at a minimum. Explore anything I find, which I don't expect to find anything. Right now my internet access is WAY slow. Down isn't bad but up is terrible. Dad is downloading a CD iso image off of the ftp server so my pings right now to anywhere are averaging over 1500ms. Way Slow. I need a break from the computer anyway. I've spent three days solid reinstalling this Linux server and getting everything backup and working correctly. I really didn't loose anything but getting the new system to deal with the old data was a trick. There were a few things that gave me more of a problem than others... PHP, Server Side Includes, Postfix SMTP, and a damn FTP issue that just completely ate my lunch for a day and a half. But if you deal with it enough, and loose enough sleep over it, you can eventually figure it out.... Anyhoo.... Till tomorrow, game on!
Have you ever wondered what a full 3 CD Linux download looked like? I knew you did, I did too. Here is a graph of what my internet usage looked like during this download. Notice that speed was 149kb, that's close to 1.2MB in line speed terms. 1.544MB is T1 speeds so you can see I was downloading my butt off.
So I'm still hooked on There.com (Check it out). Me, the guy that completely despises chat is actually enjoying it. Of course I’ve been some really nice people, even if some of them enjoy harassing the S#1T outta me. Have cool people to hang out really makes it “a lot” easier. I think I enjoy the exploration part of it the most. I’m not very good at it but its still fun. I’m working on making some maps of all the locations I know about so far. I’m sure it’ll take me a while to finish but I may find other place as I make them. This week has gone by soooo fast, with the firewall change and the server crash I’ve sill got lots to do so I figure the weekend will blaze by as well. Anyway… I’m going to get a game or two in on Battlefield 1942 before I immerse myself back into there…
Monkeys really do make me laugh…
If your starved for entertainment, check this out... Lobster Magnet.
So I'm completely addicted to this new online game called There at www.there.com. It's kind of hard to describe. It's chat, plus games, plus web, plus exploration, plus alot of other stuff. It's kind of something you just have to experience. I've made some really nice people there and that's even with me not really being a chat kind of person. Luckily enough for me a couple of them harrass me just like my friends here in the real world do so I feel right at home. Anyway... I'm still sick so I need to get to bed. I think I'm ready to sleep now.
P.S. I'm not that Old.
Sorry I haven't posted in a couple of days. You'd think with me being home 24/7 I'd have plenty of time to do such things. But I've been PMS'ing again and haven't felt much like it. I was at Mom and Dad's this last weekend. I had a pretty relaxing time there. Didn't do much but still had fun. I think Dad got me sick. I'm fighting that now. Lisa, my unemployed partner in crime, ran off to FL with her boyfriend (boy being the operative word, he's on the young side) so I have nobody to pester during the day. I basically sit around in my boxers waiting for Brandt to get home. Today I made major progress and got dressed by noon even. Maybe tomorrow I'll actually go outside. Anyhoo.....
I'm still trying to get this recording thing figured out.... Here's where I am so far. Today I went and faxed a resume and application to the Tarret Count Corrections Department. How much to you think it cost me to fax that at MailBoxes, Etc? Go ahead and guess.... I dare ya. It cost $15.34 for a 10 page fax. You can pretty much bet that I'll never go in there again.
Most people are bright enough to be able to tell if they are unemployed or not. For those who just aren't sure below are a few tips to clue you in on sure signs you are unemployed. Keep in mind this is just day 2 but boredom has already set in. First sign, you dust the "back" of the TV. Not like anybody will ever see it but just knowing it's there. Second, while making tuna cassarole (skillet type) you stand at the stove so you can clean up the spillage as it spills out instead of waiting until the end and then cleaning it all up at once. Finally, If you find yourself watching either Oprah or Days of our lives.
Check out the new Guitar Port. BTW, I'm VERY outta practice.

It's Official.....
The wondering and waiting is over. It's official, I'm unemployed.
So Jeff finally showed up for a race today. I was kind of worried, ya know with all the sucking he did in practice and qual. That damn Lomis will be the end of him. Anyway, I went to Lisa's to day to watch the race. We had alot of fun. After the race we went to www.rankabooty.net and well ranked some booty. We finally got to exchange our christmas presents. I feel bad cuz I only got her a kitty cat picture frame, which is pretty nice, but she kicked ass and got me a Line6 Guritar Port. I've pretty much been playing with it since I got home. Makes me sound pretty much like I know what I'm doing. I've got the greatest friends, don't you agree?
How long is to long for your inspection sticker on your truck to be outta date? That's the question of the day. Well I did manage to get my tag mostly on time so I figured I'd go get my inspection too. Well It was pretty much 1 year to the day out of date. I passed with a little help from the highly paid and over qualified Jiffy Lube guy. My gas cap failed the good ole suction test, but with a finger over the little hole in the cap it passed with flying colors. Eighty five dollars later, I was out of there. Next time, front end alignment.
Sorry it's been so long since my last post. Just been PMS'in. Anyway, we had a little accident last night. Brandt decided he was invincible and that it would be a good idea to SIT on a glass coffee table. Needless to say, he isn't as small as he used to be so the glass didn't give much support. He crashed through the glass and feel into the center of the coffee table. Only one side of the glass broke. He has multiple cuts and scrapes. Most notable is a 2 or 3 inch cut on his butt. Bled a little bit but stopped quickly. He also hit his head on the steel frame which gave him a headache for most of the night. He's not hurt other than that. I think his feelings were hurt more than anything. I didn't get mad at him but he realized after the fact that it probably wasn't such a great idea. Such is the life of a ten year old.
