Whatever…

So, right around the corner they are building a "Pet Resort". First of all I don't really even know what a pet resort is, much less why we need one. This is a really huge building as well. I mean, we still don't have a stop light, or a resturant of any kind, no grocery store, and only one gas station. They are building it right across the street from Deion Sanders house so maybe he has something to do with it. I dunno....

The River

So last night, I'm in this poker game. I'm in with a bunch of dorks that'll take a pair of 6's to the wall, so it's easy money. I draw the dreaded 2 & 7. Well I know as well as anybody to fold that. I folded. By the river the pot was $120 on a .50/1.00 blind game. That's pretty big for a low cost game. The flop was 2, k, A. Still the fold was the right move. The turn was a 7. Two pairs now, it's marginal but with the money in the pot you have to figure someone has something big. The river... another 7. I folded the full house 7's full of 4's. This is about my luck lately. Well actually things might be changing a bit. I'll catch ya up on that later...

See, I’m not the only one.

Quote from zdnet " Vulnerabilities in IE have become so common that some security researchers are recommending that people adopt alternate browsers. The U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team, the official U.S. body responsible for defending against online threats, also advised security administrators to consider moving to a non-Microsoft browser among six possible responses." See I don't seem so crazy for using obscure browsers, now do I?

Crack Smoking Bill

What in the hell kinda crack is Bill Gates and the Microsoft boys smokin up there in there in Redmond? They say the latest "hack" of IIS is due to hacker and not a flaw in their software. I wanna know how in the hell hackers could get in if there wasn't a flaw. Or maybe they built in a backdoor hacker access so it would be a feature and not a bug. But then again these are the same guys that just a couple of months ago said that Windows was the most secure operating system in the world, ha, because it has had the most hacks against it. I think they may be injecting it WHILE they are smoking it.

Life can be cruel

This month has been the worse month financially I've had in, well, just about forever. It started out with my computer bursting into flames. Well things were OK on the money front so I purchased a new PC, $1500. Two weeks later my Truck died. I barely made it to the dealer, that cost me $1000. Then I found my truck inspection is out and I have three tires that wouldn't pass, another $500. I had to replace my TV, another couple of hundred dollars, I changed my insurance so I got an unexpected $500 bill for that. The transmission on my washing machine when out, $400 for that... Then finally this last weekend my hot water heater exploded on me. Between a new heater, tools, and cleaning of the carpet that ran just over $500. Gezz... I can't tell you how wrong my horoscope was! :)

Kids are soooo cool

So here is proof on just how cool little kids are. Today I'm driving by a little day care center her by my work. They are building a new building very near there and the construction had messed up the day care centers yard as big machines are known to do. Well today they had a couple of backhoes, a dozer, and a big dump truck along with about 15 guys out there leveling and smoothing the day care centers yard out. These kids, about 30 of them, are out in the play ground playing. Well actually that's not true. 3 or 4 of them were out in the play ground playing, the rest were all lined up, with there little faces pressed against the fence watching these guys work. And you know these little kids weren't just standing there quietly. You know as well as I do that they were asking like a thousand questions. "What kind of tractor is that?", "Why is that tractor so big?", "Why is it so hot out here?", "What are you going to do with that truck?", "Do you drive that big dump truck?", "Why not?", "My daddy has a big dump truck!". You know that this is only like maybe 1% of the questions they probably asked.

Cool Toy

So at work I have this cool new toy. It's a spam filter for the exchange server. I built one a year or so ago for the house and it worked pretty well. This is a spam appliance that is a little more slick and user friendly than mine was. It's scans for virus, scans for spam, and then passes the email on to the exchange server. So far I've had it in for about 5 days. Looking at the stats 82% of all email coming into the server is spam. Currently we are blocking or tagging about 79%. Right now the filter is in the learing process. Hopefully next week I'll have some real stats and graphs and such. Anyway.... spam on!

:(

So this past weekend Brandt went to stay with his mom for the summer. It was a sad day and it hasn't gotten much better. I guess the only things that get me buy is thinking how she must feel having to give him back. I really hate that we have to put him through this all. But the good thing about it all, is it's only for the summer and then he'll be back. Leo is missin him ton's too. He's been all lovin on me like some kind of affection whore. Doesn't he know that's my job? :) Anyway, back to the grind......

New Toy

Here is a link to my newest toy.... Tape Management. This is a development version were I'm developing the application for work. It should be pretty much fully functional except for the phpmyadmin link. That link does work on the production server but not here on my hosting service. Pretty much 98% of all the code is mine. I borrowed code and then modified it for the calendar but even then I re-wrote large portions of that as well. At work we do nightly backups on all of our servers. These backups use many, many tapes. We store these tapes off site at Iron Mountain for a period of time. It we ever needed to restore any data, I should say when we need to restore, we have to know where the tape that has that data is. Basicaly this application tracks if the tape is in house, offsite, or retired. It also tracks when the tape is due to be returned whether it's a month, a year, or permanently offsite. It notifies you when a tape is overdue as well. It stores info on the particular transaction of the tape and it also stores info particular to that tape and is carried over the life of the tape. I'm currently in the process of stream lining the workflow and some of the code. Making this a little more user friendly. I'll be adding help and documentation at a little later date. As of right now it all works as advertised but I'm still tweaking things so don't be shocked if something doesn't work. Feel free to play with it and please let me know if you receive any kinds of errors.

New PC

So I got my PC yesterday. That was pretty quick. I ordered it on Thrusday about 5pm and I received it yesterday morning about 11am. Yeah, I know it's a Dell but you know, so far I've been pretty happy with it. It's a 3.0GHZ P4 with hyperthread, 1 GB of ram, 120GB Serial ATA Hard drive, 128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card , 17 LCD flat sceen monitor, THX Certified Altec Lansing 5.1 Dolby digital surround speakers plus a lot more. So it's pretty rockin right about now. I'm still in the process of recovering my data. I'm having some issues because the new PC has XP home on it, which I'm starting to hate, and the old one had XP Pro so I'm having some security hurdles to over come in the recovery process. I recovered my taxes, checkbook, and music so I guess that's the important stuff. If I only had my bookmarks I'd be set. Anyway, that's coming along nicely and a couple more days and I'll be all set.

Jeff 3D

So this last weekend Brandt and I went to see NASCAR 3D at the IMAX theater in Dallas. Although it was pretty short, less than 50 minutes, and pretty expensive, nine bucks, it was still pretty good. It takes you a few minutes to get used to look at everything in 3d but it does look very good. I wish they did all movies like that. Hell if they could do the races like that I'd be set. Anyway, Brandt enjoyed it. He said the only thing he'd change about it is that he'd make it longer, and put more of Jeff in it. Then he said that they could do all of that in the sequel, Jeff 3D!

Ack….

Well it's offical, today my computer died. And it died a spectacular death too... Plenty of smoke and bad smelling stuff. No flames or sparks though. So it's off to the Dell web site. I decided that I didn't even want to mess with fixing it or building a new one, so I just bought one. It'll be here in a week. I'm sure it'll be a long week at that. Luckily, I think the drives in it are good, so I'll be able to save the data. My Win2k Server is still working good, that's what I'm on now. And I still have a Red Hat server that's going strong, tuxbert, that I'll use until the new one gets here. Anyway...
